Step 0 - Applicable only to Amazon Kindle eBooks

To read ebooks on your Kindle, you don't have to download/install any extra software on you computer. As part of the check out process, you'll be redirected to Amazon.com's website. The ebook you checked out will automatically be downloaded to your Kindle from Amazon.com's website.

Step 1 - Download and install free software

As a first step, you need to download and install the free software that allows you to enjoy the type(s) of materials you are interested in.

To download Adobe eBooks, you need Adobe Digital Editions. OverDrive Media Console is available for…
  • Mac OS v10.4.9 (or newer)
  • Windows 98 SE (or newer)

To download OverDrive audiobooks, you need OverDrive Media Console. OverDrive Media Console is available for…
  • Android v1.5 (or newer)
  • BlackBerry v4.5 (or newer)
  • iPhone OS v3.1.3 (or newer)
  • Mac OS v10.4.9 (or newer)
  • Windows 98 SE (or newer)
  • Windows Mobile® 5 and 6

Step 2 - Activate the software

After you have installed the software that you downloaded, you need to take steps to activate the software before downloading digital materials.

Adobe Digital Editions requires activation. Adobe Digital Editions can be activated anonymously or by using an Adobe ID. Anonymous activation allows you to download and read DRM-protected eBooks on a single computer only. Activating using an Adobe ID allows you to download and read DRM-protected eBooks on multiple computers and transfer them to supported eBook devices.

More information about activating Adobe Digital Editions is available.

OverDrive Media Console for Windows requires a security upgrade.
OverDrive Media Console for Windows utilizes Windows Media Player 9 Series (or newer) to play DRM-protected files. The first time that Windows Media Player attempts to open a DRM-protected file, it will alert you that a security upgrade must be performed before the file can be opened. The upgrade takes just a few moments.

Only OverDrive Media Console for Windows requires a security upgrade. All other versions of OverDrive Media Console do not require security upgrades.

More information on OverDrive WMA Audiobooks and upgrading Windows Media Playeris available. OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks do not require the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.

Step 3 - Check out, Download, and Enjoy

Browse or search this site for downloadable materials. When you locate a title of interest, add it to the cart and check out the title. Once you have checked out a title, a download page is displayed. Click the 'Download' link to start the download. Once the download is complete, open and enjoy the title. You will never accrue late fees with titles you download from this website. At the end of the loan period, titles will expire and be automatically 'returned' to the library. At this time, you can delete the expired file(s) from your computer.

More information is available about the checkout process.

Step 4 - Transfer Audio to Your Portable Audio Player (Optional)

Instructions are available for transferring MP3 audiobooks to portable devices.

Instructions are available for transferring WMA audiobooks to portable devices.

A list of all supported portable devices is available.

Additionally, please note that in order to use OverDrive WMA Audiobook on a device, the device must either support the bit rate of 32kbps or be able to transcode 32kbps files to a supported bit rate.

You may want to check device documentation to determine if a device supports DRM-protected Windows Media content at 32kbps.

Note: If you are using a Pocket PC, OverDrive Media files must be transferred to a memory card. Be sure you have a memory card with sufficient memory space installed, and be sure to specify the memory card in the course of the transfer process.

Audiobooks, like print books, come in a variety of lengths, and this makes it difficult to estimate how many books you will be able to fit on your device. Please note the following:

  • One Part = One CD
  • One CD = 80 minutes (or less) of audio content
  • 80 minutes (or less) of audiobook content = not more than 20MB of disk storage space for WMA audiobooks, 40MB of disk storage space for MP3 audiobooks.

Using these numbers you can assume that you'll be able to store the following number of audiobook Parts on your portable device. (Please note that these numbers do not take into account actual vs. theoretical disk space as well as storage space used by the firmware of your device.)

  • 128MB = 6 WMA Parts = 3 MP3 Parts
  • 256MB = 12 WMA Parts = 6 MP3 Parts
  • 512MB = 25 WMA Parts = 12 MP3 Parts
  • 1GB = 50 WMA Parts = 25 MP3 Parts
  • 2GB = 100 WMA Parts = 50 MP3 Parts
  • 5GB = 250 WMA Parts = 125 MP3 Parts
  • 10GB = 500 WMA Parts = 250 MP3 Parts
  • 20GB = 1000 WMA Parts = 500 MP3 Parts

Explore your options…

Search for digital materials using a variety of criteria on the advanced search page.

Take digital materials with you on-the-go. Many audio titles can be burned to CD, and most audio titles can be transferred to supported portable devices.

If you come across a title that you are interested in checking out, you can add it to your Wish List.

If a desired title is not available, you can place it on hold.
